Opis taksona

U ovu porodicu spadaju sitni tvrdokrilci sa dugim valjskastim rilom i antenama na kojima prvi segment nije izdužen. Veličina Evropskih vrsta varira od 1.2 do 4.5 mm. Obično su goli, nekad metalnog sjaja ali postoje i vrste čije je gornja površina pokrivena poleglim ili uspravnim čekinjama ili ljuspama. Telo je obično najšire u zadnjem delu i postepeno se sužava prema napred. Izraziti su biljojedi koji se kao odrasli hrane zelenim vegetativnim delovima biljaka dok larve živu u različitim delovima biljaka gde biljka oko larvi često formiraju karakteristične strukture - gale. Hrane se različitim vrstama poljskog i livadskog bilja pretežno iz porodica Fabaceae i Asteraceae. Porodica je bogata vrstama. U Evropi je poznato blizu 200 vrsta od kojih se kod nas pojavljuje preko 70 vrsta.
